5 Major Contributions of the Romans

Bound Books

Books/Novels, just like music, have been a huge part of my life, especially during my childhood. The very first “book” was the codex which was a stack of pages made of wax tablets. These pages evolved. Instead of wax tablets, animal skin was used, making it look more like the modern pages have today. Books today have way more thin pages and therefore, more convenient to read and carry.

Julian Calendar

The calendar was invented by King Romulus at around 753 BCE. A calendar is a chart that shows the weeks, months, and days of a year. These help us stay organized for school. Calendars are also very useful for busy people like doctors, teachers, and farmers. Although with slight changes in the names of the months and days, this contribution is still very apparent. It has been modified on phones, and other electronic gadgets.

Alphabet

The alphabet is a group of different letters with corresponding sounds. Every word in every sentence is composed of these letters from the alphabet. If this was non-existent, then where would our written sources/references come from? The alphabet was also one of the ways people used to communicate to each other in the past. This collection of letters is still widely used today. I believe that it is what connects us, but people today seem to just take it for granted. The alphabet is the base of all erudition.

Newspaper

On Sunday mornings, my family enjoys having a nice breakfast while reading the newspaper. The newspaper/newspread is a way for people to know the latest news and issues. The Romans used to write the latest military and civil topics on metal. This invention is also still evident in our world today. People read the newspaper not only to find out about current events, but to look for different services and how they can contact them. Newspaper is also used for different kinds of arts and crafts.

Theater/Arts Music

Music and Theater arts have been such an important factor in my life. I have enjoyed dancing and playing the piano and the guitar. I am very grateful for this contribution of the Romans. The Romans specialized in Pantomime, a kind of theatrical art where in words are not used and the actors just hold up a happy or sad face. They told the story through dance. This is where the famous symbolisim of theater (🎭) comes from.
